Gucci Mane seems to have changed his mind after previously stunning rap fans by insulting the dead. In his latest song and music video, he is now pleading with rappers to refrain from “Dissin the Dead.”
In an act of guilt, Gucci Mane agrees he was wrong to diss the dead and advises, other rappers, to not do what he did.
Guwop croons on the song, which was produced by ATL Jacob, TM88, TooDope, and Akachi, as he expresses regret for helping to start the practice.
I know I should be more careful with the sh*t that I said/ I feel like I started a trend, they never gon’ stop/ They gon’ keep dissin’ the dead.” Gucci Mane.
The accompanying video, directed by Omar The Director and set in Atlanta, shows Gucci delivering bars while pacing through a graveyard and donning a threatening mask at various moments.
Rappers and others connected to them have a history of speaking ill of the deceased, with some even going so far as to desecrate a rival’s grave on occasion. Gucci made mentioned Pookie Loc in his own song from 2012, “The Truth,” who was slain by Gucci in self-defense throughout a house invasion in 2005.
Pookie Loc was a member of Young Jeezy’s previous rival group. Guwop notoriously brought up the subject again in 2020 during his Verzuz match versus Jeezy by playing “The Truth” as one of his choices for the evening.
According to Wiz Khalifa’s P.S.A. on social media from last year, Gucci Mane isn’t the only rapper trying to stop the practice of demeaning the deceased.
“As enternainers lets try some shit next year. Minding our own business. Not dis respecting each others family, dead homies, or area they come from. Stop using someone else’s significant other as a one up to the other person. Actually showing the same love you expect to get” – Tweeted Wiz Khalifa
