When Yung Gravy took TikTok star Addison Rae’s mother, Sheri Easterling, as his date to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, he demonstrated his viciousness and that “all the mothers adore him” (Aug. 28). Sheri and Yung Gravy were all the craze at the VMAs.
The red carpet coupling may appear unrelated to the TikTok controversy between Yung Gravy and Addison Rae’s parents to those who are ignorant of it, but it is all related to reports that Easterling’s former spouse Monty Lopez, from whom she is supposedly separated, has been dating younger women.

In the midst of the controversy, Gravy, 26, started flirting with Easterling in a Jeff FM podcast episode and many TikTok videos. The unlikely pair still engages in fun social media banter today. Their flirtatious internet exchanges spurred Lopez to publish an odd video in which the 46-year-old issued a boxing bout challenge to Gravy.
On August 11, Gravy reacted to Lopez’s taunts to fight the rapper in many further TikTok videos. “I’m a grown man. I’m not gonna fight you over TikTok drama. You’ve got one of the most successful daughters in the world and you decide to act half her age to try to get some attention while embarrassing your whole family,” he remarked. “So grow up, get some help, and if we cross paths in real life, don’t do anything stupid.”
Yung Gravy performed his viral hit “Betty (Get Money),” which samples Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up,” on stage during the VMAs Pre-Show. The song became his first hit on the charts when it peaked at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Sheri and Yung Gravy made their red carpet debut after Sheri changed her Instagram bio to reflect her status as a single mother back in July. In January 2004, the 42-year-old wed Monty Lopez. They separated before getting remarried in 2017. Together, they have three kids, including Addison, who is 21.
Fans have noticed other social media activities in addition to Sheri’s updated bio. In fact, before bringing it to the red carpet, Yung Gravy and Sheri took their connection to TikTok.
On July 14, Sheri made a TikTok that Yung Gravy duetted. Sheri applied a filter to reveal what “Your Next Date” will be in the video. Sheri’s initial video featured her dog and a picnic in the park, but Yung Gravy added his name over the dog segment. “Name a time and a place,” he wrote with the caption “#gravyrae.”
