Donald Glover helps Aubrey Plaza break into Hollywood and land her breakthrough role in 2009. When she received the call to audition for Funny People starring Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler, the Parks and Recreation actress was already working with Glover, whom she knew from their time performing together at Upright Citizens Brigade in New York.
“Everything goes back to Donald Glover for some reason. Donald actually taped my [Funny People] audition, which is really funny to think about now. He taped me and did Seth Rogen’s lines. I sent it in, and then Allison Jones, who was casting Funny People at the time, who’s like this huge comedy casting director, said, ‘Judd [Apatow] really likes your tape, but he needs to see you do standup because the character is a standup comedian, and they need to cast someone that does standup.’ I was not a standup comedian at the time, but I just decided, Okay, I’m just going to pretend to be a standup comedian.” Claimed Aubrey Plaza to other sources.
The actress said that Glover granted her request to do “five minutes of jokes” at his stand-up performance. On August 11, Plaza expressed her desire to play Lara Croft in a future Tomb Raider movie.
The actress said during a Tuesday (August 9) interview on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon that director Edgar Wright texted her erroneously assuming she had been chosen to play Lara Croft after viewing a magazine front cover for her next movie, Emily The Criminal.
“Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it. It was so funny when [Edgar] texted me that because I didn’t realize how strikingly similar those photos are. Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster; those are very different. It’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it.” Plaza recalled in an interview.
